Pretty is Pain

Yesterday, I did a cover for the song “Pretty Hurts” by Beyonce. I’m still getting use to singing publicly, so don’t judge me :). That’s not the point of this entry, today, though.

This empowering song depicts the everyday challenges that women face: the pressure to look a certain way, especially in the entertainment industry. A woman can be extremely talented and overlooked because she doesn’t fit the standard, externally.

Recently, someone got online body shaming me and possibly other ladies in an imaginary completion either to win some guy or an opportunity. Then proceeded to go online, months later, stating someone body shamed them. Like.. “how sway?!” Either way, this song had been in my head to sing and felt like it was the right time to cover.

In my situation, “pretty hurts” means, as Kanye stated in his song “All falls down”, “..the prettiest people do the ugliest things for the road to riches and diamond rings.”

I’ve recently learned that people may not even know you and never met you before but they can see you and, instantly, hate you because they see something in you that you may have yet to see in yourself or maybe they simply mistook your opinion. Giving an honest opinion and tearing someone down is completely different but people don’t want to understand that.

They pretend to misunderstand you because they see you. They will tear you down in hopes that you will continue to not believe in yourself and when you are distracted enough, they swoop in and snatch the imaginary crown that you never even knew you had…
